Malaysia Airlines Announces Busan and Firefly Unveils Kunming as MAG Continues Asian Network Expansion.

Kuala Lumpur, 4 September 2026 Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has announced further expansion of its international network, unveiling a new Malaysia Airlines service to Busan, South Korea, alongside a new Firefly service to Kunming, China, during its MATTA Fair media briefing at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).

The announcement was made during a briefing led by Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group, together with senior members of MAG’s airline leadership team.

The two destinations broaden the Group’s Asian network and provide Malaysian travellers with additional direct connectivity to South Korea and China.

Strong demand, but operating costs remain a key consideration.

Speaking at the event, Captain Nasaruddin said that demand for air travel remains strong while highlighting the cost pressures that continue to affect airline operations.

Fuel currently represents approximately 40% of operating costs, making fleet efficiency and modernisation an increasingly important component of MAG’s long-term strategy.

The Group has been progressively renewing its fleet, including the introduction of the Airbus A330neo into Malaysia Airlines’ long-haul and medium-haul operations.

Bryan Foong, Chief Executive Officer of Airline Business at MAG, said that 10 A330neo aircraft are now in the system.

Foong, who assumed the Airline Business CEO position in February 2026 and oversees Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Amal, is responsible for the strategic direction and performance of MAG’s airline portfolio.

Malaysia Aviation Group: Operational performance remains strong

MAG also shared several indicators of its recent operational performance during the briefing.

On-time performance has averaged 91.1% over the past eight months, with the Group targeting approximately 92% for the financial year. This remains comfortably above its stated target of 85%.

The airline business also reported a Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) of 82%.

These operational indicators are particularly important as Malaysia Airlines expands its network. Sustaining reliability while simultaneously introducing new aircraft, routes and frequencies will be an important component of the Group’s growth strategy.

More frequencies to Fukuoka, Surabaya and Brisbane.

Busan and Kunming are not the only areas of network development.

MAG also indicated that it intends to increase frequencies to Fukuoka, Surabaya and Brisbane by the end of 2026, adding capacity across Japan, Indonesia and Australia.

Another potential South Asian destination is also expected to be unveiled separately through Malaysia Airlines’ social media channels.

The latest expansion follows significant network development by Malaysia Airlines during 2026, including the addition of Shenzhen, Changsha and Fukuoka earlier in the year.

MATTA Fair promotions.

The announcements coincide with MATTA Fair 2026 at MITEC.

Malaysia Airlines is currently advertising MATTA fares offering up to 30% off, together with an additional 5% discount for Enrich members. Eligible Visa payments can receive a further 5% discount, while Enrich members can also earn bonus points.

Firefly is similarly offering discounts of up to 30% across selected destinations during its MATTA campaign, with the public sale running from 3–14 September and travel available through 31 August 2027.

What the expansion means for Malaysian travellers

The addition of Busan is particularly noteworthy because it provides another gateway into South Korea beyond Seoul, giving travellers more direct access to southern Korea and potentially supporting two-centre itineraries involving Busan, Gyeongju and Seoul.

Kunming similarly strengthens connectivity between Malaysia and China. As the capital of Yunnan Province, Kunming can function both as a destination and as a gateway to the wider Yunnan region.

For Malaysia’s travel industry, additional routes and frequencies also mean greater opportunities to develop both outbound and inbound traffic.

At Corporate Information Travel (CIT), we welcome the continued expansion of Malaysia’s aviation connectivity and look forward to supporting our airline partners and customers as these new services take flight.
